Artistic Reflection

We had some middle school researchers coming into my Art room to have a visual experience of their topic. Jeany and Alina (Grade 8) had a clear idea of what to do with Art even before coming in, but Jeslyn and Karen (Grade 7) struggled a little bit on how to present their thinking process visually. They tried drawing a mind map and working with brush pen to come up with different fonts but we wanted to stay away from using words because we were in the Art room.

So Karen started making a world map with different flags and painted them with only red and blue which represents Korea to show how K-pop has been influencing other countries. It was symbolic and spoke very clearly about the topic. Jeslyn started drawing video tapes and CDs along with the world map to show the types of K pop movement.

Fatima (Grade 6) who is working under the theme of finding the difference between Indian music and American music also came to the art room one day. We played a music piece from each country and she made an abstract piece of Art by listening to the music. The artwork that she created from listening to Indian music had squiggly lines, bold colors, and etc but the artwork that she created from listening to American music had very light tone of green with light lines. From these artworks, she was able to see the difference in two musics more visually and clearly.

I hope our students learned the ways to use Art for their thinking process and how they can use Art to deliver their ideas.
