On Friday, eight students and I went on a field trip to the war memorial in Yongsan. We went there to study about how music can affect the lives of people, both civilians and soldiers alike. We found that many of the citizens were forced to make decisions and do things that they didn't want to do. For example, many of the North Koreans during the Korean war war wanted to isolate themselves from communism due to many different reasons, but were forced to support the North Koreans in order to avoid death.
The different wars could affect different soldiers in different ways. However, most of them found it difficult to return to their previous lives. Many different scenes from war could keep them awake at night and give them nightmares and different noises could remind them of the horrors of the war. Mady and I got to experience a simulation of being in a fighter jet during the Korean war and we could feel the different emotions and the adrenaline rushes that came from being in that situation. It was easy to imagine the fear that the soldiers would have felt in a similar predicament like the one we were in. Today, I think the most important thing I did was be able to experience the soldiers mindset during a war and even through just a small glimpse of what war would have been like, I realized that the affect war has on people and their different emotions and thoughts are not something that can be expressed just through simple words.
